The Forgotten Responders
Understanding the hidden toll on death investigators, forensic professionals, and last responders
Service Description
As a death investigator and forensic professional, Ryan Jensen brings a deeply personal and human perspective to the often overlooked emotional toll of working with death and tragedy. Drawing from his own life — losing his father to drugs as a teenager, navigating ADHD diagnosed later in life, and raising young children — Ryan shares how these experiences intersected with the realities he faced in the field. He helped support families impacted by traumatic events, including those affected by the Annunciation Catholic Church and School shooting in Minneapolis, where children and community members were killed or injured and long-term healing efforts continue. After 16 years in death investigations, Ryan made the difficult decision to step away due to the demands of long shifts and overwhelming caseloads, despite his love for the work, because he recognized the importance of addressing mental health and resilience for himself and others. In this powerful talk, he explores triggers, compassion fatigue, isolation, and coping strategies — offering compassion, connection, and reassurance that those who carry these burdens are not alone in their feelings.
